Geotextile bags are flexible geosynthetic products manufactured from woven or nonwoven geotextile fabrics. They are generally filled with sand, soil, or other project-approved materials and used in slope protection, underwater construction, and temporary cofferdam works. Unlike conventional rigid protection structures, geotextile bag provides a flexible form of protection that can be arranged to follow the required ground profile. When properly designed and installed, filled bags form a protective layer that helps reduce direct erosion of exposed soil.
For coastal protection projects exposed to waves, tides, and strong water currents, large geotextile bags can be used in breakwaters, groynes, and revetments. Their filled weight and arrangement resist hydraulic forces, while the geotextile fabric provides containment and, when properly selected, filtration. For coastal protection and shoreline erosion control, we recommend starting with large geotextile bags measuring approximately 40 × 60 cm, made from geotextile fabric with a mass per unit area of at least 200 g/m² and a tensile strength of at least 30 kN/m.
