NuoKun manufactures polyethylene road mats in thicknesses ranging from 5mm to 40mm, providing temporary access and ground protection solutions for mining areas, pipeline projects, and other industrial applications. For oilfield and mining projects, we recommend evaluating 40mm thick plastic polyethylene road mats.
40mm polyethylene road mats can support loads of 60-80 tons. Oilfield access routes often cross muddy ground, soft soil, loose gravel, and areas exposed to repeated heavy vehicle traffic. 40mm temporary road mats can distribute wheel or track loads, improve access conditions, reduce the risk of vehicles becoming bogged down, and limit direct damage to the underlying ground.

1. Improve Access Over Soft and Muddy Ground
Oilfield well pads and equipment routes may cross wet soil, muddy areas, or loose gravel. Heavy vehicles traveling directly over these surfaces can experience wheel slippage, localized sinking, and ground damage. A 40mm ribbed road mat creates a more continuous temporary driving surface and distributes part of the vehicle load when installed under suitable conditions.
2. Support Heavy Equipment Access
Oilfield projects may require the movement of drilling equipment, construction machinery, material transport vehicles, and other heavy equipment. Compared with thinner mats intended for lighter traffic, 40mm thick road mats are a suitable option to evaluate for heavy-duty temporary access routes.
3. Reduce Repeated Ground Damage
Oilfield equipment may travel along the same access route many times during a project. Repeated traffic over soft soil can create deep ruts, ground deformation, and additional road maintenance requirements. Properly installed plastic road mats provide a protective layer between vehicles and the original ground. This reduces direct tire or track contact with the soil. After the project, the mats can be removed, cleaned, inspected, and reused in other suitable areas if their condition remains acceptable.
4. Adapt to Temporary Access Routes and Work Areas
In addition to connecting well pads with existing roads, 40mm road mats may be considered for equipment access routes, temporary material transport lanes, and selected ground protection areas. Their modular design allows sections of a temporary route to be installed and removed as site requirements.

A metal mining facility in Siirt, Turkey, faced ongoing transportation difficulties during a rainy season that lasted six consecutive months. Persistent rainfall left the ground muddy and soft, while the access road became uneven and difficult for heavy trucks to navigate. Fully loaded vehicles faced an increased risk of getting stuck, disrupting the movement of materials into the facility. The customer had to keep adding stabilization materials to maintain access, but the road surface remained difficult to manage under prolonged wet conditions.
To address the problem, we recommended 40mm heavy-duty polyethylene road mats to create a temporary access route. The mats provided a more even driving surface and distributed vehicle loads, reducing direct pressure on the soft ground. Unlike repeatedly replenished road stabilization materials, road mats can also be removed and relocated when needed, making them a practical option for muddy construction sites, mining areas.
After installation, trucks carrying 60 tons of cargo successfully crossed the road mats and delivered its load to the site. This overcomed the access problem and allowed material transportation to continue. The project demonstrates how properly selected heavy-duty plastic road mats support temporary vehicle access on muddy and uneven ground.
Q1: Why are 40mm road mats suitable for oilfield access roads?
40mm thick road mat provides a robust temporary surface for heavy vehicles and equipment. They distribute loads and reduce direct contact between vehicle tires and soft ground, making them a practical option for muddy oilfield access roads.
Q2: Can 40mm polyethylene road mats be reused?
Yes. Polyethylene road mats can be removed and reused on other suitable projects if they remain structurally sound. Inspect the panels and connectors for cracks, deformation, or other damage before reuse.
Q3: Can 40mm road mats be used for mining areas?
Yes. Depending on the ground conditions and equipment requirements, 40mm thick road mats can be considered for temporary access roads in mining areas, providing a more stable surface for vehicle movement and equipment transportation.
